Most people who land on your website do it from a phone, standing in a parking lot or sitting on the couch. If your site makes them work too hard, they leave and call the next business on the list. The good news: you can spot the most common problems yourself in a few minutes. Here are five to check today.
1. It’s slow on a phone
Pull up your site on your own cell phone, on regular cell service (not your home Wi-Fi). Count the seconds until you can read and tap things. If it takes more than three or four seconds, you’re losing people. Folks won’t wait. A slow site usually means oversized photos or a bloated template doing too much behind the scenes.
2. There’s no tap-to-call button
On a phone, your phone number should be a button. Tap it, and the phone starts dialing you. If a visitor has to copy the number, switch apps, and paste it in, many simply won’t bother. This one tiny fix often brings in more calls than anything else.
3. Your contact form doesn’t actually email you
This is the quiet killer. A “Contact Us” form looks fine, but the messages never reach your inbox, so it feels like nobody’s interested. Test it yourself: fill out your own form and hit send. Did an email land in your inbox within a minute? Check spam too. If nothing shows up, you may have been losing leads for months without knowing it.
4. The information is out of date
Wrong hours, an old phone number, a menu or price list from two years ago, or “Merry Christmas” still up in June. Outdated details do two things: they send customers to the wrong place, and they make people wonder if you’re even still in business. Walk through your site as if you were a stranger and fix anything that’s no longer true.
5. You can’t be found on Google
Open Google and search the way a customer would, like “plumber near me” or your trade plus your town. Then search your business name directly. If your own name doesn’t bring up your site near the top, that’s a real problem. Being invisible on Google means people never even reach the site you paid for.
A quick self-check
Run through these in order. Most owners find at least one:
- Site loads in under 4 seconds on cell service
- Phone number is a tap-to-call button
- Contact form sends a real email to you (you tested it)
- Hours, prices, and contact details are current
- Your business shows up when you search Google
Any one of these can quietly cost you customers every week, and you’d never see the calls you didn’t get. The fixes are usually straightforward once you know where to look, and you shouldn’t need to learn a single technical term to get them sorted.
